This week’s episode of The Flower Files got a little more personal. We’re talking about what it really means to be your own boss—not the Instagram version with latte shots and perfectly styled desks, but the honest, behind-the-scenes stuff. The petals and the thorns.
We know firsthand that being your own boss is equal parts magical, messy, and mentally exhausting. It’s creative freedom, but also late nights, financial decisions, emotional rollercoasters, and more responsibility than most people realize. So today, we’re walking through it all with you—from the moments that make us cry (happy or otherwise), to the business pivots we never saw coming.
It’s Not Always Pretty (But It’s Always Real)
We didn’t start Wildly Native because we wanted an easy life. We started it because we wanted a meaningful one—where our values, creativity, and community actually guide the work we do.
What no one tells you when you make the leap from a steady paycheck to petals and entrepreneurship is how lonely it can be at times. You’re the one responsible for everything—orders, payroll, emails, decision-making, and yes, taxes. There’s no IT department or HR team. It’s just… you (and maybe your dogs squeaking a chicken toy in the background while you try to record a podcast).
Being your own boss means you don’t clock out. Your heart is all in, even when your body’s exhausted.
But Then There’s the Magic
That freedom you dream of? It’s real. We get to:
- Step away when our family needs us
- Make room for mental health and healing
- Choose what projects align with our values
- Say “no” to the things that don’t feel right (like Christmas-week weddings)
- Deliver joy with every bouquet, box, and bloom
It’s the quiet pride of knowing we’ve built something from scratch. That our customers see the team behind Wildly Native—not just Liza or Lizzie, but the entire crew who makes the magic happen.
We’ve cried in the field, laughed in the van, and delivered flowers to people who didn’t even know they needed them. And those moments? That’s what keeps us going.
Boss Life = All the Roles
Let’s be real—being your own boss doesn’t mean you only do the fun stuff.
You’re the founder, the creative director, the email sorter, the delivery driver, and the one checking if the pressed flowers molded (again). You’re making strategic calls about whether pressing blooms for Etsy is worth the labor—or if it’s time to pivot into dried bundles instead.
We’ve learned that not every product needs to stay. And not every idea is a win. But with every tough call, we get closer to what’s right for us—and for our people.
The Messy Middle Is Where Growth Happens
People often ask, “But are you actually making money?”
Here’s the truth: yes, we’re profitable—but it took time. It’s a seasonal rollercoaster, and some days we’re flying through deliveries, while others are quiet and unpredictable. We’ve had to learn how to:
- Create stability from fluctuating income
- Hire smart and build a team that shares our values
- Work with a financial advisor (lifesaver!)
- Handle setbacks with grace and strategy
- Set boundaries with our time and energy
The decision fatigue is real. The inbox is always full. And comparison on social media can make you feel like you’re doing it all wrong.
But we’ve learned to close the email tab. To unsubscribe from what doesn’t serve us. And to come back to our why—over and over again.
If You’re in the Messy Middle—We See You
Maybe you’re still dreaming of quitting your 9-to-5. Maybe you’ve already leapt and you’re in freefall. Either way, we want you to know:
You are not alone.
We’ve had days where we question everything and nights where we can’t sleep. But we’ve also had moments of pure joy—when a bride sees her bouquet for the first time, or a stranger’s face lights up with an unexpected delivery.
This work is hard. It’s human. It’s worth it.
“Being human and owning your own business is feeling everything deeply—but having to put a good face on.”
Yeah, that one hit us too. Thanks, Amber.
