Episode 41: Through the Seasons: From Field, to Dried, to Gifting

Episode 41 Title Image of Podcast Blog Post

As the holiday season draws near, we’re reflecting on one of the most fascinating parts of our work: the journey our flowers take from the fields to their second life and preserve them as dried, pressed, or crafted treasures. Whether you’re a flower enthusiast or simply curious about how blooms make their way into wreaths, décor, and crafts, we’re here to share a behind-the-scenes look at our flower preservation methods.

The Cycle of Flower Preservation

The transition from spring’s vibrant blooms to autumn’s muted tones is a fascinating dance dictated by nature. Each season brings unique challenges and rewards, but our goal remains constant: to preserve the beauty of every flower long after it has left the field.

In the spring, our fields burst with color. Peonies, calendula, and eucalyptus are just a few of the blooms we begin to harvest. By summer our drying barn becomes a kaleidoscope of hanging bundles—strawflowers, gomphrena, marigolds, and more—each carefully arranged to dry naturally. By fall, the focus shifts to preserving hydrangeas and other hardy blooms, ensuring we’re stocked for the creative projects of winter.

Be Adaptive In Your Flower Preservation

Every flower has its quirks, and some even surprise us. For instance, one variety of peony earned the nickname “barbecue sauce” because of its unusual scent—a discovery that left us laughing in the fields one warm afternoon. Not all flowers are as cooperative, though. Delicate cosmos and dahlias can prove finicky during heavy rains, and eucalyptus, while sturdy, can release tiny worms during drying—a strange but harmless part of the process.

Our work also requires constant adaptation. Flowers like yarrow thrive when properly maintained, while others, like violas and larkspur, are harvested in small batches and pressed or dried for crafting. These blooms go on to become components of wreaths, ornaments, or even edible decorations.

Creative Ways to Use Dried Flowers

Dried flowers are more than remnants of summer! They are versatile materials for year-round creativity. Some of our most popular items include:

  • Wreaths: A perfect mix of dried seed pods, grasses, and flowers brings seasonal charm to any door.
  • Craft Bundles: Available on our Etsy store, these small bundles are ideal for DIY projects or aromatic uses.
  • Décor and Ornaments: From vase arrangements to holiday decorations, dried blooms add a natural touch to any setting.

We love hearing how our customers use these creations—feel free to send us pictures or leave a review!

Wedding Work and Year-Round Hustle

While December may seem like a quiet time, it’s anything but. This year, we’ve kept busy with wreath orders from local businesses and weddings that extend well into the holiday season. Even in the slower months, we’re fielding inquiries and planning for the next wedding season.

One piece of advice for engaged couples: book your vendors early! The floral industry is as seasonal as it is competitive, and securing your dream team ahead of time ensures a smooth planning process.

Embracing Change, Season by Season

Every year brings new challenges, whether it’s unexpected weather or evolving trends in wedding and floral design. But that’s what makes this work so rewarding. From the delicate pastels of spring to the deep hues of fall, we’re continually inspired by the beauty of nature and the creativity of our clients.

As we wrap up this year, we want to thank everyone who has supported us, whether by ordering a wreath, booking us for a wedding, or simply following our journey. Your enthusiasm keeps us going, even through the longest days in the field or studio.

From all of us here, we wish you a wonderful holiday season. We’ll see you in the New Year with more flowers, stories, and a deep appreciation for the ever-changing beauty of our craft. Cheers to another blooming season ahead!
