The Art of Wreath Making

Episode 38 Title Image: The Art of Wreath Making

The holiday season is here, and at The Flower Files, nothing marks the transition quite like the art of wreath making. As the days grow shorter and colder, our attention shifts from fresh flowers to creating beautiful, natural wreaths that embody the spirit of the season. This week, we’re diving into everything you need to know about wreath making—tips, tricks, techniques, and even a few funny stories along the way.

Wreath Making 101: A Story of Tradition

Wreath making has been a tradition for us for years, evolving from simple crafts into a treasured part of our holiday preparations. It all started when one of our hosts, an ag teacher in a former life, was challenged to teach her students how to make wreaths—before she even knew how to make one herself! She learned on the fly from a local garden center and, ever since, has passed down her knowledge. The result is a process that’s not only practical but full of personality.

There are different methods for making wreaths, from simple bundled greens tied with twine to using a machine with a foot pedal to crank out wreaths in a production line. Our preferred method involves a hands-on approach—gathering fresh materials, creating bundles, and building each wreath step-by-step on a metal ring. Each wreath tells a story, and every piece of greenery plays a part in making it unique.

The Craft of Creating the Perfect Wreath

Our approach to wreath making is all about personalization. For some of us, it means creating big, beautiful wreaths full of texture and color, while others prefer smaller, more delicate versions perfect for a cabinet door. Everyone has their style, from those who meticulously count and measure bundles to those who pile in as much greenery as possible for an overflowing effect.

The materials we use are just as varied. Cedar, fir, juniper, holly—each type of greenery adds a different look and feel. Some types of greens, like fir, may cause irritation, and holly, with its sharp leaves, can be tricky to work with, but the final result is always worth it. We also love incorporating different elements like pinecones, berries, dried flowers, and even orange slices to give each wreath a distinct character.

One of our favorite ways to make wreaths is by using grapevine bases. These wreaths have a more natural, artistic feel, and we love adding coastal elements like oyster shells, whimsical white pine, and even a bit of glittery ribbon. They’re perfect for adding a festive touch to any home, especially those looking for a rustic or coastal vibe.

The Personal Touch: Workshops and Wreath Making Kits

One of the things we love most about wreath making is sharing the joy with others. This year, we held workshops where attendees got to make their own wreaths from scratch. It was incredible to see how each wreath, though made from the same materials, ended up being completely unique—a reflection of the personality and creativity of the person who made it. Some participants preferred an asymmetrical design, while others went for a classic, balanced look. No two wreaths were the same, and that’s the beauty of it.

For next year, we’re planning to create DIY wreath-making kits that will include everything you need to make a wreath at home. Imagine a girls’ night, a cozy evening with hot cocoa, or even a solo crafting session—complete with a kit full of greenery, wire, gloves, and step-by-step instructions. It’s all about bringing the experience of wreath making to more people and helping everyone get into the holiday spirit.

Lessons from Nature

Wreath making isn’t just about creating something beautiful—it’s also about connecting with nature. We forage for local materials, whether it’s pinecones collected in the summer before the squirrels can get to them or holly from a nearby tree. It’s a reminder of how closely tied we are to the natural rhythms of the year. There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking what nature provides and turning it into a festive decoration that can be enjoyed all season long.

The Joy of the Season

Wreath making is more than just a craft—it’s a celebration of the season and the joy that comes from being creative. It’s a way to bring nature into our homes, add a personal touch to our holiday decor, and share a bit of that festive spirit with others. Whether you’re a fan of full, extravagant wreaths covered in decorations or simple, natural designs, there’s no wrong way to make a wreath. Every piece is a work of art, and every creation tells a story.

From all of us at The Flower Files, happy wreath making! May your holiday season be filled with creativity, warmth, and a beautiful wreath on your door.
